Backlog not working

Kevin Cornuot February 12, 2024

Hello everybody,

I'm facing an issue that I can't seem to correct on JIRA.

Setup : I created a board with backlog activated on it :

First issue : I have no BACKLOG column in my board setting, thus I can't filter correctly my issues :

As a workaround, I manually created a column "should be backlog" because otherwise all my undesired status were unmapped and not showing in the backlog.

But it's not what I want to do because that workaround column is showing in my Active Sprint and even if there is no issue in it, it is not a viable solution.

Second issue : When I create a new ticket, it's not showing in the backlog

I don't know if the two issues are related but I tried all the solutions found on internet for that and nothing is working.

My issue filter in the board is taking ALL the tickets from the projet :

And I know issues are missing, because numbers are not adding up, if I look how much tickets are not done in my project, there is 115, but in the Backlog, there is 23 in the sprint and 74 in the back log so 97 ? Where are the 18 missing issues ?

I have absolutely no filter activated :

Can someone explain to me what's going on ?

Regards,

Hi @Kevin Cornuot , can you tell me if this is a team managed project (lower left corner). I am guessing that it may be. With that said issues in your initial status upon creation will default to your backlog. For instance, let's say that you have to do, in progress, and done as your statuses. In that example as issues are created, they will appear in the To Do status, and they will appear in your backlog by default. If you are running sprints, once you start your sprint, the issues will appear in your active sprint as well as in the active sprint of your backlog. You do not need to, nor should you create a backlog column.

as we move forward with this discussion, could you please provide the following information:

  • team managed or company managed project (TMP OR CMP)
  • is this a software project or a business project?
  • Are you using scrum or kanban?
  • If this is a CMP please provide the underlying board filter which can be found under the board configuration > general tab
  • if this is a CMP please provide a screenshot of your column configuration under board configuration > columns tab

Hello,

The project is Company managed :

I got rid of that column and put all the statuses in the "todo" column for now.
Shouldn't there be a base column backlog for thoses statuses like "Kanban Backlog" for kanban boards ?

Thanks for your answer !

No, The initial status is used for your backlog. If you wish to have a status, call backlog and make that your initial status you could certainly do that although that is not common.

here is some interesting reading material you might find useful- https://www.atlassian.com/agile/scrum
