I'm trying to setup automation to total the sum of a field "Story point estimate" for subtasks and edit the field in parent to display total. When I select  the dropdown list to select a field it isn't in the list. It's a custom field but other similar custom fields appear is there a simple reason/fix for this?

Hi @Russell Parry -- Welcome to the Atlassian community!

When you try to directly type in the field name Story Point Estimate for edit, it shows a message at the bottom that "Not all fields are currently supported..."  So that is probably what you are seeing.

As a work-around, consider adding your own custom field to store this value.

Of note: because you will not have the previous value of a story's estimate, and you cannot nest branches, consider doing this using 2 rules:

Rule 1

  • Trigger: story point estimate changes
  • Condition: has a parent
  • Action: mark the parent to indicate a need to recalculate the total...either another custom field or a special comment

Rule 2:

  • Details: select the option to allow this rule to be run by other rules
  • Trigger: whatever condition you created in Rule 1
  • Action: clear the totaling field
  • Branch on the children
  • Action: add each child's estimate to the total

Best regards,

Bill

Thank you very much Bill, I really appreciate your very detailed answer and will give the workaround a try.
