Hi, I have a number of fields that we use in other reports and tools that enable linking 3rd party applications and reporting systems. However it's easy for people to forget to fill the field in or know which value to use, so I want to automate this. We have one Jira project with multiple backlogs and boards for each team and stream of work. The value of several fields are based on the backlog or board an issue is created in, therefore I'd like to automate the setting of these fields, is there a mechanism to determine backlog or board an issue is created in so I can automate the setting of the field?

Hi @rob.morrey -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

No, the board and backlog cannot be determined directly for an issue, however...

  • A board (and its backlog) are views of issues in a project based on a saved filter
  • You have several boards in a project, and so I am assuming that is a Company-managed project, each having a saved filter
  • Thus when you create an issue, you set the field values in a way for it to appear for a particular board; in your case this is for a team

Back to your question, because you know the filters for your boards, you can decide which fields to set as needed.

An automation rule could set the additional fields for your linking / reporting, with conditions on the fields to direct the flow.

To get you started on creating your rule, please refer to these documentation and example sources:

Kind regards,
Bill
