Hello All,

I am trying to solve a basic issue here, am using Zapier to automatically create issues in my Jira Cloud software and I have it assigning a label based on input that my reporters provide elsewhere. My question is how would I set an assignee based on the label that is put to the issue when it is created? Needs to be a different user per label. Labels are all predefined so it just needs to be an If label A then assign to employee X, else if label B then employee Y and so on.

Thanks!

Hi,

Good Day!

This is particular task is not feasible manually in jira cloud.

We can achieve this particular task using "Automation for Jira"Plugin or "Automation Lite for jira",which is a free plugin.

Let me know in case of any queries regarding the same.

Best,

P N B

Thank you for the information. I will look into the Automation Lite function as we are a small startup company so free is always a plus. I will reach back out on this thread if I have a question about this issue again.

Thank you for the help!

Zac

Circling back:

I am not sure if I am just looking in the wrong place, but when I look in the Atlassian Marketplace within my Jira cloud instance, I am not seeing anything with the app name you specified above. I went and searched the marketplace in general and only found a lite version for servers, not cloud. Please advise.

Thank You,

Zac

Hi @Zachary_Howe

An alternative to Label is Components.

Components can be added to Jira Projects by a Project Admin. These components can have a Component Lead, who is auto-assigned a create issue if no assignee is selected manually.

To set these up you need to be a Project Admin and then:

  1. Go to Project Settings > Components (on left-hand menu)
  2. Press the Create Component button
  3. Enter a name and a Component Lead (a user on Jira)
  4. Change the "Default Assignee" to the Component Lead, and press Save

---------------------------------

If you do want to use Automation for Jira, this is now a native app to all Jira Cloud instances.

For Project Rules you need to be a Project Admin - then:

  1. Go to Project Settings > Project Automation (near bottom of left-hand list)
  2. Press Create Rule in the top-right
  3. Set the Trigger as "Issue created"
  4. Add the Condition "Issue fields condition" and set it to a label
  5. Add the Action "Assign issue"

^ You could use branches here to have one rule which manages multiple labels / assignees depending on your needs. Ensure when activating the rule that you add the Automation user to your permission scheme, so they can create, edit and assign issues.

If you want a rule which runs globally across all projects you can set these up as a Jira Admin - either press the "Global administration" hyperlink at the top of the project page, or go to Jira Settings > System > Automation for Jira > Automation Rules.

---------------------------------

Note: Whilst you receive unlimited project-level executions per month, global rules have execution limits which are:

  • 100 per month for free Jira
  • 500 per month for standard Jira
  • 1000 per month per user for premium Jira

For more information on how to use Automation, the limits and tracking your usage, please see these pages.
