Are story point estimates for a story and epics available for Edit Field automation

I have automation that is editing a field for an Epic, and I would like to use the story point estimate field to hold the sum of all story point estimates for a set of stories that belong to the epic.  jira-automation-storypointestfield.png

When I select the Edit Field, and go to select the field Story Point Estimate it is not available to choose for automation.

Hi @Neil Wills

Take a look at the video tutorial here on how to sum up story points from stories to an epic.  You will have to use original estimates story points fields instead.

Out of interest, one of the steps in our planning is taking an Epic, and estimating the Epic to help with prioritizing differently sized Epics before committing to the story break down and estimation.

Are you working with issues in a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project?

Story Points is a field used in Company Managed projects.

Story Points Estimate serves the same purpose but is used only in Team Managed projects.

Typically Story Points/Story Points Estimates are not used in Epics directly. There may be some adverse affects if you add the field to your Epics.

Instead I would recommend you create a custom field for Total Story Points, add that field to your Epic, and put your value into that field.

This is a company manage project.

I thought the reason why story points, and story points estimate are displayed for ex: Epics is that you can create a roll up if necessary of all the points for a set of stories.

What is interesting is that effectively I am using the story point estimate effectively for capture the epic sizing.

We took the Epic, and then built out stories with the leads as another breakdown, and used story point estimate to capture the sizing.

We plan to meet as a team and story point the stories and add\remove details in the stories as they will be the team that effectively does the work.  It is useful to compare the lead estimates with the actual estimates that the team came up with.

The reason we are estimating at the lead level, is that we can work with product to determine what epics we should plan for each quarter.
