Hello,
we had an evaluation license for Jira (Server), which now ran out. I bought a new license to keep using the product.
How do I apply the license to the instance that is already up and running but stopped working due to the license running out?
We want to avoid having to migrate into a new, blank software state. But currently there seems to be no way for me to manually apply the new license key that I bought to the version that ran out. I can not copy-paste the key under "My Atlassian - Licenses", and I also cannot paste the key into the administration page of our server.
Best regards
When an Atlassian service goes past its evaluation period, it goes into a read-only type mode for users, but not for administrators.
The Licence section in the admin menu continues to function as it did before, so all you have to do it log in as an admin, go to the licencing screen and paste the new licence key into it.
Could you explain what "can not copy-paste the key" means? What happens when you copy the key? And when you paste it into the licence box?
Hi,
thanks for the answer. I'm attaching a screenshot to explain the issues:
Sorry for the wrong phrasing, I can paste the key, but it will cause the error on the top right. It says (rough translation) "license could not be installed, please make sure the license is for the correct product" etc. This happens when I click on "Lizenz einfügen" at the very bottom of the page.
The other error happens when I try to install the Jira Software the top, inside the yellow frame. As my assumption was that I can change/paste the license up there, after doing that. But it causes the bottom error. I have not been able to find out where "the logs" referenced in the error message are located (this would be very helpful, "refer to the logs for more information" is very vague and as a new Jira user not very helpful).

Hallo Marc,
while there is only one Jira server it consists of three different applications (Anwendungen) with three different license types.
Your screenshots shows, that Jira Software doesn't seem to be installed. I guess the license key you got doesn't fit to the Jira Software application. You might want to try & paste the key in the Jira Core application section or (maybe) to the Jira Service Desk section.
If you want to use Jira Software, click on "Herunterladen" & it will be installed. Then get another license for Jira Software fitting your user count & paste it to "Lizenzschlüssel".

Hi,
thanks for the reply. As I said, trying to install the software with the button at the top gives me the generic error with reference to "the logs", which I don't know how to locate.
The license we got has to be correct because it has the same name as the evaluation license:
Downloading and installing Jira Core (bottom part), I assume, has to be done from the machine that is hosting the Jira instance?
Best regards,
Marc

OK, your current license type is "Evaluation" (First screenshot). You trying to paste a non-matching license type (Starter) to Jira Software, which isn't even installed.
Click on "Installieren" first, wait for the installation to finish & apply the license after this.
Depending on your OS you installed Jira on information on the application log can be found in

Hi,
the problem was related to the installed versions. After installing version 8.2.2 the Jira Software was was correctly identified as installed and the new license key could be pasted in.
Thanks,
Marc
