I am trying to setup the application links between our JIRA and Confluence installations. On Confluence side, the link shows green "Connected". But on JIRA side, it shows Network Error.
If you're doing SSL, make sure you have valid certificates, including chain cert. You can use curl to check if your SSL is set up correctly. It will complain about the same things that Java doesn't like. Worst case, you can create a dedicated connector for Application Link usage only.
