Adding start and end dates to issues in scrum project

Jodi Bloom July 30, 2019

I am trying to add fields for start and end dates for my project issues; I've dug and dug and can't find a solution!

Jira won't allow me to add these date fields to my issues, can someone please help?

Thank you!

Hi @Jodi Bloom

So if I understand correctly, these 2 fields already exist for issue types in your project, but what you're trying to do is have them showing on a screen?

It sounds as though you're at least a project Admin if you're able to see those settings.

I should actually have gone 1 step further back and asked whether you're using the server or cloud version of Jira. Within cloud, if you have the left panel open, at the bottom it will tell you if it's NextGen, see below

Once I know your answer to server / cloud and then, if cloud, classic or nextGen, I will hopefully be able to advise.

I am on cloud-based, and I don't see "next-gen" on the left panel

Hi @Jodi Bloom

Okay, progress from my point of view.

From the left panel, select Project settings, then click on Screens. You should then have something that looks vaguely like this, with one or more links to screens

Click on one of the links (you may need to do this again for the other links if you have different screens, we don't) and you should have a screen with one or more tabs, like this

At the bottom of this screen, there should be a Select field dropdown, and you need to add those fields to one of the tabs. If you can't see them in the dropdown it most likely means they're already in one of the tabs and you can move to the next step.

Go back into your project and again select Project settings from the left panel. Then click on Issue layout and click on the Edit layout link, to be presented with a screen similar to this

The fields should now be somewhere on this screen, in the Hidden fields section or under Secondary fields - they can be dragged into any other section to show where you want them

Hi @Jodi Bloom

You may need to expand on "Jira won't allow me to add these date fields" - how are you adding them? What happens? Error? Nothing?

Are you a Jira Admin? Is this for a classic project or next-gen?

Sorry, I know this is a lot of questions, but you've given very little detail

Not a problem, I wasn't sure what info to provide.

I've tried going into:

project settings/issue layout/edit layout: when I go here, all I can do is drag and move the fields, I can't change or add anything

project settings/screens: when I go here, it says to go to issue layout

project settings/fields: when I go here, it just shows me how many screens locked fields have

I'm not sure if I'm a Jira admin (I should be), and I don't know where to look to find this

Class or next-gen: I also don't know how to identify this info.

And thank you for responding!
