Adding a Calculated field to a Project List

Barry Neilson

I expected Jira - being a project management tool - to feature calculated fields in the project list.

I am trying to present a field that displays a Date Count between the [Start] and [End] dates.

I have attempted to define a custom field - which then leads me down rabbit warrens of screens, and screen schemes, but no means to customise the field.

is there a solution?  How can I add a calculated field to a project list? What would the formula look like?

Cheers

Hello @Barry Neilson

Jira does not natively provide a custom field type for dynamic calculations.

For the specific case you mention you could create a custom Number field and fill it using an Automation Rule to do the calculation and fill the field. Here is a link to the Automation Rules documentation

https://support.atlassian.com/cloud-automation/docs/jira-cloud-automation/

You can find some pre-built rule templates in the Automation Rule construction area, plus more examples in an online library and in posts in this community.

Alternately there are third party apps you can add that will add a Calculated custom field type

Thanks for your response.

I'm basically a brand new sparkling eyed user of Jira.  I don't know how to do a great deal or anything.  Are their instructions that I can follow for what you're suggesting?

What such apps do this well?  I've tried a number of apps and they don't work on the list page.... or don't work at all.  I literally spent 3 hours on an app reading every single word and that useless piece of  <such n such> wasted 3 hours of my time chasing me around every link in Jira.

Hello Barry,

You may want to take some of the free training available through https://university.atlassian.com to become better acquainted with the functionality of Jira.

The documentation link I provided gives the information about the components of Automation Rules and where to go to create them. It provides generalized instructions, but not instructions for create rules for specific use cases.

You can also find a variety of videos on YouTube from Jira SMEs who focus on creating tutorial content. I happen to like the tutorial videos from ApeTech - https://www.youtube.com/@ApetechTechTutorials

As to what apps provide calculated custom fields I don't have a specific recommendation. Which apps have you tried and how did they not meet your expectations?

And it is possible that not all custom field types can be added to the List page view. That may include custom field types provided by third party apps.

This page documents the types of fields that can be added to List View:
