Add hierarchy level as non-administrator in a team managed project

Thierry Mes January 27, 2023

Hello,

I would like to add a higher level of issue type to my hierarchy (above epic). Something like an initiative. However, I am not able to find a way to accomplish this. I am a non-administrator (only for team based project). Is there any possibility to make this happen?

Hi @Thierry Mes

another option may be to utilise one of the hierarchy-focused apps from the Atlassian Marketplace. Many of these apps have their own ways of establishing issue hierarchies, often based on issue links.

I can only speak for the app that my team is working on - JXL for Jira - but here, you could simply pick one or more issue types to be the "Initiative" issue types, and pick one or more issue link types to signify parent/child relationships between your epics and your initiatives.

This is how it looks in action:

JXL works in (and, if needed, across) projects of any type, be it team-managed or company managed. It also comes with heaps of other features, including support for (bulk) inline-editing, sum-ups, or conditional formatting.

As said, there's several apps in the Atlassian Marketplace that may help with that, so if a Marketplace app is an option for you, perhaps try a few and see which one works best for you.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Hannes

Thanks for this, will try!

@Hannes Obweger - JXL for Jira , we subscribed for a JXL for Jira license. Thing is that I can not find a way to make a link between a epic and a new random created issue type  (for example an initiative). We do not have a premium account so, advanced roadmaps is not available. How do I get this work?

Hi @Thierry Mes

thanks for reaching out!

For that, you'll need to create a so-called custom structure in JXL. In your custom structure, you can map your initiative issue type to the top hierarchy level, and chose one or more issue link types to "link" your epics with your initiatives. The configuration will look something like this:

Please find the relevant documentation here: https://jxl.app/docs/guide/advanced-features/#custom-issue-structure.

You can also always reach us directly via https://jxl.app/support, if that's easier!

Best,

Hannes

@Hannes Obweger - JXL for Jira  thank you for getting back to me. First part is clear. When I want to select ''is child of'', I have no results. How can I create this?

Hi @Thierry Mes

it looks like there's no issue link type with that description available, or, that issue linking is disabled altogether on your site. Either way, you can configure your site's issue linking here: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/configure-issue-linking/

  1. Make sure that issue linking is enabled. It should be by default, but could have been disabled.
  2. If not already there, create a new issue link type that you want to use for the parent/child relationship. By default, there should be a "is parent of"/"is child of" issue link type (but it could have been removed).

If that doesn't work, please be so kind and reach out via https://jxl.app/support, and I/we will be in touch shortly!

Best,

H

Hi,

I don't think this is possible as Advanced roadmap is meant to help you plan across your organization where team managed projects are meant to only be managed at the project level without interaction with the others project.
