Add a new field retrospectively

Hi

I've just created and added a new custom field to an Epic create screen within a project

How can I make this field visible in older Epics so that it can be populated retrospectively?

Thanks

Sherry

To ensure that a newly added custom field is visible in older Epics for retrospective population, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Field Configuration:

    • Access your Jira settings.

    • Choose "Field Configurations" under the "Issues" section.

  2. Edit Field Configuration:

    • Locate the field configuration scheme linked to your project, as it controls which field configuration is used by each issue type in your project.

    • Edit the field configuration associated with your Epic issue type.

  3. Add Field to the Configuration:

    • Within the field configuration, include the newly created custom field in the configuration. This step ensures that the field becomes available for existing Epics.

  4. Update Existing Epics:

    • After adding the field to the field configuration, return to your existing Epics.

    • Open an Epic that requires updating.

    • The newly added custom field should now be visible on the Epic view screen.

    • Populate this new custom field with appropriate data as needed.

THANKU YOU

Please stop using AI to write answers without checking them.

Step 3 is complete nonsense, and the whole answer is looking at the wrong thing.

To add a field to the configuration, the newly created custom field should be included within the field configuration. This ensures that the field becomes available for existing Epics. This is want i meant to say in step 3.

The other way to achieve this

Just get into the epic issue and in the view screen navigate to the configure section. There you can find the new custom fields in the field section. You can place that custom field where you want, either as a context field or a description field. Save changes, then the following configuration will appear in all epics. If you wish to edit that custom field, add it to the edit screen.

I worked on the issue and then checked using the possible methods I know before providing the answer

This statement is still completely wrong:

"To add a field to the configuration, the newly created custom field should be included within the field configuration. This ensures that the field becomes available for existing Epics. This is want i meant to say in step 3."

You do not add fields to field configurations.

Apart from that, your correction is now going in the right direction - adding the field to screens.

The answer here has nothing to do with field configurations.

Hello @Sherry Nightingale

There are couple of things:

1.Make sure that this field is showing on the View screen of your project.

2.In order to find it, click on three dots on the view screen of the issue and click on "Find your field"

Thanks @Nikola Perisic

If it is on the view then i'm assuming I need to add it to the Edit screen?

Would this then make all previous Epics show this field as editable?

Thanks

Correct, you would need to add this to the edit screen as well. And yes, it should show this field as editable.
