Add JiraBot to more than one channel?

Shea Martin September 6, 2017

How can I add @jirabot to more than one channel?

I have a dedicated #jira channel for all my jira notifications to go to. However it is hard to have a conversation in that channel because there are so many updates. So I would like to have the ability to unfurl jira issues in another channel when they are mentioned by their key. Is this possible?

You should be able to add the bot to multiple channels.  You just need to invite the bot to that room first.

JIRA Cloud for Slack FAQ: Public and Private Channels & Multi-Party Direct Message -  has details of how this is done.

There is a note there that when you invite the bot to the room, you do need to specify how the bot is supposed to connect to JIRA (ie which URL contains your JIRA instance). But if you decline you will need to at some point specify this with the command:

/jira connect your-company-jira.atlassian.net

Otherwise the bot won't be able to unfurl issue keys when mentioned in that channel.

I have a #jira channel, which I connect with the bot. Unfurling, everything works fine there.

In my #dev channel:

  • if I type BN-434, no information about the issue is unfurled.
  • If I type /jira BN-434, I get a message saying project BN not found.
  • If I type /jira connect my-comp.atlassian.net I get a messaging saying this JIRA is already connected to this channel...
  • if I do /invite @jirabot I get a message saying that they are already in this channel.

Solution:

Ok, I figured it out. Once you have connected jira anywhere, in the channel, you type /jira, then click on the manage connection link. Then you can add a connection to the channel, and configure it differently than how other channels are connected.  I guess I just assumed that I would see all channel connections in one screen. This works perfect though.
