Notice the new Jira Business timeline?

If you are using business timeline, you might have notice the new visual changes. Before rolling it out further, we want feedback from active Jira business project users who rely on timeline planning.

Old Timeline

What is changing

  • Cleaner layout

  • Unlimited child items (currently we limit at 100 child items)
  • Early groundwork for future features like displaying more fields and date roll-ups.

How you can help

  1. Tell us how the new Timeline works for your team in real scenarios.

  2. Call out anything that slows you down or makes planning harder.

  3. Share gaps where old functionality feels necessary or where new workflows are unclear.

Book here directly for a chat with me or leave you contact below for me to schedule a convenience time (please provide your time zone).

Want early access?

If you do not currently see the new Timeline but want to try it, comment below and we can opt your site into the experiment. Spaces are limited, so we will confirm individually.

Your feedback will directly influence the next iteration. Thanks for helping us shape a Timeline that actually solves real planning problems.

Hi there, where can I find the notification that this was going to be implemented in my instance?

It would be very helpful to have milestones or sprints available as markers on the timeline.

Being able to visually anchor work to key delivery points (e.g. sprints, milestones, releases) would make the timeline significantly more actionable.

Hey! How did you get the timeline colour feature to work in a Business Space?  Mine are all b oring grey lines, and there seems no way to change it,

@richa Colour selection is not available in Jira Business Project today. The grey lines is based on your work item status (blue for in progress, green for done).

Only Software project allows users to select colours for their work items. We are working on bringing this feature to Business project!

Hello, on our side, we have been using Scrum boards without dates and the boards have been configured to use a schedule by sprint dates.

Now, when clicking on the Timeline icon, we are getting the following:

Update this project's settings to use the timeline

To use the timeline, this project needs to have a date field included in its field configuration scheme.

Would this be an expected behaviour change? Might be a regression and we are part of a canary release?

I would appreciate your feedback. Regards

Hi @iason.rodis,

Thanks for reaching out! I can certainly clarify what’s happening here.

It looks like you might be referencing Jira Business (formerly Jira Work Management) documentation. But from your description you are in a Jira Software project.

What you are experiencing is an expected behavior change rather than a regression or a "canary" release. Jira is moving toward a more unified configuration model for Company-Managed Projects. This means the Timeline view now strictly validates your project's field settings to ensure the fields are configured correctly, even if you are using "Schedule by sprint dates" for child level scheduling.

How to unblock yourself

To resolve the error, the Start date and Due date fields must be "shown" in your project's field configuration.

Here is the relevant excerpt from Troubleshoot the timeline in Jira Software

Start Date and Due Date fields must be in the field configuration associated to your space.

To edit the field configuration:

  1. Next to your space’s name in the sidebar, select More actions (), then Space settings.

  2. In the sidebar, expand Work items, then select Fields.

  3. Select Edit ().

  4. On the field configuration page, select Add field.

  5. Find the missing field in the list and select it to add it back to the configuration.

How to manage field configurations in work items.

Still not working?

If you confirm the fields are active and the error persists, there may be a deeper configuration problem or a bug. If that's the case, please raise a support ticket here so our team can investigate your specific instance.

Kind regards,

Cyprien
