It's here: 'Work' is the new collective term for all items you track in Jira

Last year, we announced our commitment to evolving the language in our tools to better reflect the diverse ways teams define and manage their work in Jira.

Starting today, we're moving to using ‘work’ as the new term for everything you track in Jira.

blog-3a.png

Our goal is to make Jira the place of work for all teams, ensuring that the language in our tools is accessible and supportive of this vision.

We understand that this is a significant change, and may require time for teams to adjust – however, we're confident that this shift marks the beginning of a broader, more inclusive approach to managing work in Jira.

What’s changing today

This month, you’ll begin to see ‘work' and ‘work item’ terminology replacing 'issue’ across our Jira Cloud products and experiences.

As we implement this change, you may still encounter the term 'issue' in some areas of our tools, particularly within admin experiences and support documentation. We’re working hard to resolve these inconsistencies over the coming weeks.

There are no changes to existing APIs; they will continue to function as usual with the term ‘issue’ for the time being. Likewise, your current filters and saved searches will still support the term 'issue' to ensure backward compatibility. For more information, read our developer update.

We’re committed to making Jira speak your language

This update is just the initial phase of a larger plan to better incorporate your team’s specific language into Jira, reducing the reliance on a single, ‘catch-all’ term.

So, how are we doing this? Just like today, you’ll be able to customize as many work types as needed to align with your team's workflows, fields, and automation preferences.

We’re extending that functionality, and making Jira smarter. Now, when you’re working on a specific type of work, the interface will dynamically adjust its language—your language—to fit that context.

For instance, when viewing the details of a work item, the UI will update in various places to specifically reflect the type of work you’re engaged in. So, if you’re working on a standard task, Jira’s terminology will adjust to align with this context.

blog-3b.png

Similarly, when checking your notifications, updates will be tailored to more accurately reflect the type of work they’re related to.

Whether that’s a marketing team’s launch, a sales team’s lead, or a software team’s bug, your notifications will clearly specify this context.

blog-3c-new.png

These are just some of the updates coming soon that incorporate the language you use for your unique work types. We’re continuing to explore more ways to personalize Jira to suit the way you work, and welcome your thoughts and ideas.

The road to 'work' in Jira

As we implement these changes, we’re open to your continued questions and feedback. We’ve updated our FAQs to address common questions, and our support team is available to assist you with any issues that you encounter due to the renaming.

Thank you for your patience and support as we refine Jira's language to better align with the needs of all teams.

Note: We’ll also begin transitioning users to the new navigation in March 2025. The new navigation is a redesigned experience that prioritizes efficiency, clarity, and adaptability. Read more about the new navigation.

FAQs

Q. Why not use terms like ‘item,’ ‘record,' or ‘activity’?

While these are all valid options, our research indicated they can be ambiguous in what they represent. Our goal is to make Jira the place of work for all teams, and we believe 'work item' is a natural replacement for ‘issue,' as it more accurately captures a record of work, rather than just any activity.

Q. Why not use a term like 'ticket'?

We conducted research with a diverse range of teams that had varying levels of technical knowledge. Although there were many common terms that teams used to describe their work, most were not broadly suitable. Based on the feedback we received, 'work item' was chosen as the most appropriate term for all teams.

Q: Can admins choose what term replaces 'issue'? Will this be a site or project-level setting?

No, admins will not have the option to decide what term replaces ‘issue.’ By default, ‘issue’ will be replaced with ‘work item’ for all Jira customers at the site level.

Q: Can admins opt out of this terminology change?

As this update is being implemented across all our Atlassian products, we’re unable to provide the option to opt out of this change.

Q: Will this change be implemented in Jira Data Center as well?

As of now, there are no concrete plans to introduce this change to Jira Data Center in the near future.

Q: How does this change affect Jira Cloud APIs?

There are no changes to existing APIs; they will continue to function as usual with the term 'issue.' New APIs will begin using the term 'work item.' See our developer update for more detail.

Q: What impact does this change have on JQL and existing filters?

JQL clauses and any existing filters/saved searches will continue to support the term 'issue' to maintain backward compatibility. We'll introduce a new alias for 'work' to support the terminology updates.

Q. How does this change affect custom fields?

These updates do not affect your custom fields. If there are conflicts with your existing setup, we recommend adjusting your custom fields and issue types in your project or global settings to avoid any overlap with our new terminology.

Q. What impact does this change have on automation smart values?

There are no changes to your automation smart values at this time, they'll continue to use {{issue}} terminology. We're currently exploring how we'll be updating smart values in the future and will keep you updated.

Thanks for this @Josh Sherwood

I also searched our Product Updates page for work and collective ... but nothing. I wonder when this will be rolled out. I have asked on another post and still am unsure if this will roll out with the New UI nav changes at the same time or not?

Thanks for sharing this though

I had a user ask about the terminology in the window for creating 'issues.' Will it be asking for 'Work type'?

@Yatish Madhav These updates have begun and will progressively roll out to all instances throughout March and April. These updates are not specifically coordinated with the navigation changes, so you may see them at different times.

For customers on release tracks, we'll provide more detailed information about specific dates soon, so you'll know exactly when to expect these changes.

@michelle_bachmann Yes, that's correct. This field will be updated to 'Work type.'

Hi @Josh Sherwood
Could you tell me what the impact will be on smartvalues in automations?
Will it always be {{issue}} or {{work}}?
Will the term {{issue}} be retained to ensure backward compatibility?

Hi @Samuel Segaud - there are no changes to automation smart values at this time, they'll continue to use {{issue}} terms.

This is so wrong!! Apart from inner terminology in Jira which might improve (or not), this will make it more difficult to find specific content in the web. Now you search "jira issue" in Google and you quickly find what you are searching for. When you write "jira work item" you will get a lot of random results which are not what you are looking for at all.

Almost as non-specific and hard to explain to business users coming from other project management tools as a Jira "project."

Atlassian do better.

You have offered translation and intermediary steps in the past.

If you don't want to call it "Issues" then have a system administration item so an organisation can rename "Issue" to "work" as they see fit.

Instead you have just injected your preference onto organisations for... No real reason at all.

We need you to fix the long standing bugs and feature requests, like customising the Macro menu in Confluence. Not random renames.

@Csaba Vertessy on the left the reference is on issue in general. On the right the reference is on the specific issue type "Bug", "Task", "Launch...

@Nestor Rodriguez Perezmay I ask what you are searching for that is that generic? Remember that the term Jira Issue have 20+ years of content on Google, and it will take time to get updated information for the new terminology. Content from millions of pages do not magically update because Atlassian changes terminology :)

@Csaba VertessyIt is not just you. They are identical.

@Josh This is confusing. Can we update the FAQ detailing what is changing and what isn't? e.g. Smart values

I am baffled and stunned to say the least! What the heck are you upto Atlassian?

Why in on earth go make this change? Why change something that works?

Couldn't you instead make it possible for and Admin to change the Issues to Work, if that is the preference. The norm is to call it an issue. What is going to be in different languages+

With this change and the fiasco of the new navigation, Atlassian has gone down the wrong rabbit hole.

It would be nice if Atlassian focused on the bug and feature requests and not on these random name changes or making navigation a that in my view is completely flubbed. Had it on for two seconds and revorted to the old.

I'd like to say I'm shocked but, I really can't say that I am... so many things Atlassian could do to improve Jira and other products. How is this something we would want?

This is going to create massive confussion and frustration. Meanwhile countless bugs and feature request that are open for easily over a decade will remain on "gathering interest", if at all...

We pull reports by using "Issue" classification.  If we do that using "Work" going forward, will it pull the previous "Issue" items as well?

Are we sure this article isn't some fake AI hallucination?  Seems like an immense amount of work, confusion and change (except for all the 'issues' tech debt left behind) for zero good reason I can think of.  Maybe spend the time & money on changing the shade of Atlassian blue as we all know it is just a shade or 2 too light.  Is there somewhere we can vote against this change?

@Csaba Vertessy It took me a minute to see it. It would have helped a lot if the specific differences had been highlighted, but I see wut they did ther.

Yet another "why" change. Again like the navigation it looks like change for the sake of change.

What is the value for the customer?

Thankful that we're on a data center not cloud. Please do not bring it to DC.

Seems like another useless change for change's sake.

"Now, when you’re working on a specific type of work, the interface will dynamically adjust its language—your language—to fit that context."

Does this not already happen basically? We have different issue views setup on different projects so we only see the specific fields we want to.

And Not sure how changing "x commented on your issue [bug icon]" to "x commented on your bug [bug icon]" is any better. Literally no extra info was added to that notification. - And clearly from these comments, most people didn't even notice the different.

I've found bug reports/feature requests with decent support that are over 10+ years old.... why not implement those things that your customers actually want, instead of confusing everyone?

Should just be an option in settings if this really has to be implemented

So I filter by Bugs, Queries etc... will I still be able to do that, and when I raise a Bug, will it still be called a bug or will it be work???

The issue is that replacing 'issue' with something else does not help solve much. Hoping that you prioritize your backlog to focus on real issues
