Simplified workflow

Lujain Al-Falaileh March 10, 2020

Hello,

I am trying to understand the "simplified workflow" term since it is not truly clear for a new Jira user, now I do understand the fact that the simplified workflow means that the issue can be dragged to any status forward and backward (global) with no constraints or transitions..etc, but do I consider any workflow with a global transition(which means all statuses are global) also a simplified workflow? or does it need to be the default of the project templates (Scrum, Kanban) to consider it as a simplified?

Hi Lujain,

Welcome to the community.

To tell if your workflow is considered global, view a board with which the workflow is eventually associated (board has issues -> issues belong to projects -> issue type + project via the workflow scheme will determine the workflow), and it will state.

How can I tell if my board is using Simplified Workflow?

To check this, view the Columns configuration for your board (described below) — If you are using the Simplified Workflow, you will see the words 'Using Simplified Workflow'. Otherwise, you will see the 'Simplify workflow' button or the words 'Simplified Workflow unavailable'.

There are a few other things that may or may not make the workflow global, for example, transition screens.

Hope that helps

Thanks, Jimmy!

what if I added a status with global permission to a simplified workflow?

do we keep considering it as "simplified"?

Hi Lujain,

Yes, if you add another status with global transition, then it will continue to be considered simplified as long as it was in the first place. :)

So adding statuses doesn't change the simplified to the customized workflow (logically)if they have the global transitions right?

Correct, it shouldn't.

The easiest way to make sure it doesn't change it from simplified is to add statuses via the board. See https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirasoftwareserver/configuring-columns-938845277.html - "Add status" button above the Unmapped Statuses container.

You should be able to do this as long as the workflow isn't used by another project (and you're a project administrator).
