Oracle Database configuration for JIRA installation

Deepthi Krishnaprasad March 20, 2018

Hi Team,

This is regarding the JIRA tool installation in a physical server, 10 licenses of JIRA was purchased as per SEN-11284492 . We are proceeding with tool installations in a physical server . Have some queries on DB configuration, please help.

1. We are planning to use Oracle 11 as the DB, wanted to know if Oracle can be installed in the same server where JIRA is installed or need to be in a different server ?

2. JIRA 7.8.0 version is being installed, is it compatible with Oracle 11 ?

3. What should be the volume of DB allocated to work with JIRA considering a longer period of usage ?

4. What are the procedures for integrating JIRA with Test Rail tool ?

Request you to help me with the clarifications.

Thanks

Deepthi.

Hi Deepthi

First of all: do notice this is the Atlassian Community channel and not the official Atlassian support portal.

  1. You can install your database on the same server where Jira is installed. However make sure you allocate enough resources to it. For security and scalability I would recommend using a seperate server.
As you have a small amount of users you might be good to go with 1 server only. This depends of your future plans with Jira.
  2. Jira 7.8 is not compatible with Oracle 11. See supported platforms
  3. I'm not sure what you mean with this question.
  4. For Testrail integration see this page. From past experience I remember you need to generate a key in Testrail and put it in the Jira testrail add-on. Your users also need to add their Jira user name to their Testrail profile. Everything should be in that documentation link

Hi Team,

Thank you for the prompt reply.

For question 3, I was asking about the scalability part. As you answered in point 1, we need to go for a separate Server for longer plans with JIRA.

1. AS Oracle 11 is not compatible with JIRA, please suggest which installation version we need to install that supports Oracle 11 ?

2. The JIRA needs to be installed in a Bank server location in India, Kochi, Kerala(State). Please let me know if you have any physical person that can come and support the installation procedures. If not, is there an on-call support provided that can be contacted and help us with the installation ?

  1. The last Jira version supporting Oracle 11 was Jira 6.4. See this announcement.
I do not recommend installing Jira 6.4. This versions is "end of life" since a long time meaning you will not get any support from Atlassian and you will miss a lot of new features and bug fixes.
Instead consider using Oracle 12 or another database type like Postgres.
  2. You can ask an Atlassian partner to assist you with the installation. India is too far for me! ;)
Look here for partners in India: https://www.atlassian.com/partners/search?page=1&locations=India

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for your update, I have couple more questions

1. Is Jira 7.8 compatible with MySQL, if so with which version of MYSQL ?

2. We wanted to open up JIRA to external vendors as they are also involved in defect fixing. So from the current installation on a physical server, what is the procedure for accessing the JIRA url from an external environment ?

3. On a scalability perspective, will there be any issues with MYSQL on using it for a longer term ?

  1. Jira 7.8 is compatible with MySQL 5.5, 5.6, 5.7. See supported platforms.
  2. Your network should allow users outside your network to access yours. This really depends of your company's network and firewall setup.
In short: you need a public IP address pointing to your Jira server or a reverse proxy in front of it.
  3. I have better experience with PostgreSQL than MySQL but both should work fine. I'd advise to go for the database your company / DBA's are most experienced with.

Hi Team,
I wanted to know if we setup a Jira on a cloud, do we need to have a separate DB or the tool will use an Atlassian Cloud DB.
Please help me with understanding how the DB setup works when we are installing Jira on cloud.

Thanks
Deepthi.

Atlassian Cloud takes all that away from you.  You only need to worry about doing internal admin of the applications (users, project setup, workflows etc)

Thanks for the mail. Just to clarify if our understanding is the same,

  1. JIRA cloud will be installed on Atlassian cloud.
  2. All the artifacts, projects, stories that we create will be at Atlassian network – any security issue from an Audit perspective..?
  3. Can the data in JIRA cloud DB be downloaded to a server, if needed at a later point of time..?

Not installed, just spun up.  You don't have to think about any of this.

If you want to move off Cloud, yes, you can download your data in a format suitable for importing into your own Server installs.
