What happens to old values chosen from a pick list of a custom field?

Enric Márquez December 16, 2024

Hello people,

question says it all.

I have a custom field with a list of options to choose from:
1-A

2-B

3-C

If i remove "A" and change "B" for "D". what will happen with tickets that had "A" as the chosen option on the field? and those that had "B".

will the ones with "A" show empty? the ones with "B" will show now  "D"?

I appreciate any link to the right documentation as per what I can find in atlassian is not 100% clear.

best regards,

Enric

Hi @Enric Márquez

I manage a custom field that holds all of our applications and when we retire or sunset an application I will disable the value rather than delete. This allows the old values to stay and still be searched but on new issues the value will not be available.

In the past when I deleted a value I believe the value will still be present on the issues that hold them but users weren't able to use the basic search to query for it. Probably can still search via JQL though.

Hi there Christpher, thanks a lot for your answer! its really appreciated.

and it gives me a better understanding on how to treat those that were going to be remove that now will be disabled instead.

However the ones that had an option on them that has not been removed but modified? will show the modified version or the original one?

@Enric Márquez

Just tested editing a value in my sandbox and looks like it will update all the issues that hold that value with the updated version.

I updated a service of "Hardware Support" to "Computer Support" and all the old Hardware tickets show Computer Support now.
