Validator being overwritten by approval step in workflow

I'm trying to block change requests being approved if the planned start date is in the past. I've set a validator to compare the planned start date with the current date but it seems that the approval step overrides the validation and the user can still approve the request and progress the request through the workflow.

Has anyone come across this before and found a way around it?

Welcome to the community.

From my experience Conditions and Validators are ignored on a approval step in a workflow.

There is an open request for this: JSDSERVER-6342 

I have mentioned in this that this also affects cloud and not only server/dc
