I created a new JSM team-managed space, but can't figure out how to add sub-tasks. I added subtasks in the Jira settings (under work items -> work types -> work type schemes). Is this restricted from team-managed spaces?

Yes, team managed JSM spaces are limited to only request types, you cannot add subtask as a work item. In order do to that you would need to use a company managed JSM space.
