Setting up swim lanes for software project

I have an existing software project setup in Jira service management with just a board. I need to configure it to have swim-lanes but when I go into board settings to configure it I don't see any options for swimlanes. Does anyone know how to setup swim lanes? Do I need to make a new project with a different template? Does certain templates not allow you to add swimlanes?

Can you confirm for us the project type? Go to the Projects menu and select the View All Projects option. Find your project in the list and tell us what it says in the Type column.

I have checked both the [Company Managed] Service management project type and the Team-managed service management project type, enabling the new Views feature in both, and enabling both the Board view and the Calendar view. I have looked at the Configure Views option for each of these boards, and both show a Swimlanes option.
