This question has probably been answered before but how can we remove the status from customer portal completely? I know I can modify my own columns but we want the status to be removed completely from the customer view.

Although what Jack stated is completely true, you could try this workaround as an alternate solution:
Now the customer will always see that his/her ticket is In Progress, and it will only change when this will have been resolved or closed. Of course, you have to manually change all of your request types.

It is not currently possible to remove status from the default view.
