Problem with setting up Connect

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
I am having some problems with the simple Connect "Hello World" example. I have set up ngrok, run the server and tested the server locally through the ngrok tunnel. The app installs fine, but I cannot access the hello world page: the only thing I get is the "Please contact support" short message.
The ngrok logs indicate that no connection to helloworld.html is initiated; after the initial atlassian-connect.json request when installing the app, no more requests arrive. I am at my wit's end; please advise.
