Portal settings URL - what purpose does it serve?

In Jira cloud, in a Service Management Project, under Project Settings, and then Portal Settings, you have an option called "Portal URL".

This setting by default contains a direct link to the portal page of the project in question.
What purpose does this setting serve?
Under what circumstances would I change it, and what would I potentially gain from changing it?

Good question. One scenario that I comes to mind would be if you developed your own portal using the APIs.
