We use jira to manage customer support tickets and have that project push notifications to slack.
Is there a way to have jira push slack notifications/updates into a thread as opposed to populating new "messages" into a channel. This would help keep messages about a particular contained to a single thread and help eliminate mundane scrolling.

Currently the native Slack integration in Jira Cloud doesn't thread notifications for comments or updates on an issue. There is an open feature request for that however: API-342 . You can vote on that issue on our public Jira instance, and watch the issue for updates.
Alternatively there are some third-party Slack integrations on the Atlassian Marketplace, some of which behave differently than the native Slack integration. You could have a look at those marketplace apps and see if one fits the use-case you have.
