I tried using the Linked Work items option and able to use/see fields but unable to create a Dashboard/trend series with that data.
I would preferably like to track how many of our changes caused issue tickets.
A graph with Change X has 15 issues linked, Change Y has 1 issued linked
As @John Funk mentions to create a filter.
But I don't get your trend request, no change is the same based on effort, functionality and/or complexity.
Only specific related changes based on the same requirements could be related in a sence.
But this is my personal opinion.

If you create and link the tickets by a specific Link Type (you can create a custom one) then you should be able to create a filter showing those tickets.
