Integrating JSM with a local third party application

So we are looking into integrating JSM with an in-house third party application. However we haven't done such integrations before and don't know where to start. Are there any good starting points in at least getting to know what our options are? Would we need JSM Premium?

My name is Madeleine and I am the Product Manager of Stitch It, a new Atlassian integration app. It’s a scripting tool that allows you to build complex integrations between Atlassian and third-party apps, including bespoke tools. 

Though you haven’t shared what you are looking for exactly (a tool, some guidance, etc.) I thought you might be interested in our app as we offer a connector for Jira Service Management (both Cloud and On-Premise) and a Generic Connector which should allow you to call any service with a HTTP-based API.
