Well it depends on what information you have about the software (and what you want to distinguish them by)
If they are discovered somehow you could used that discovery tool's unique Id.
I personally tend to use the name and their version as a concatenated "unique id" if it is generic software
Software is a tricky one cause unlike hardware they don't tend to have specific unique serial numbers or anything like that so looking at general software the name + version usually does the trick.
