Importing options into a Jira dropdown field

Lucas Linzmeier
February 24, 2025

I am in a Jira Service Desk and I am making two new fields that customers can fill in (say for the sake of argument, "Books" and "Countries").  I want these fields to be dropdowns that contain a lot of options (both with over 100 options).  I have all of the options I want to appear in the fields in 2 different CSVs.  Is there someway for me to create these fields and then import there options directly from the CSVs so that they do not have to be manually entered?

I saw this article which seems to outline how to do it.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/how-to-bulk-import-custom-field-values-for-certain-types-of-custom-field-827123935.html

However I do not see a "External System Import" option in Jira.

Hi Lucas - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Yes, that article would be what you follow. You must be a Jira Admin to be able to use the option identified. To get there go to Settings > System > External System Import

Then click on the link for Switch to old experience.

Let us know how it goes!

Ah, that makes sense.  I'll talk with my Jira Admin and have them look at it.  Thanks!

Hello @Lucas Linzmeier

Did this solve your issue ? I have the same problem. I need to create a field that will contains the list of all countries as option. I would like to avoid entering manually the 200+ option but I can't find a way to do it.

I read the link that you gave, but my understanding is that it's to add option in an existing work item, not to create option for a field.

@John Funk , any feedbacks would be appreciated as well

Hi Corinne,

It would do both - it would add the option if it is not already there, and of course, add it to the issue you are creating. The issue you are creating is just a throw away, you can delete if after the option gets added to the field.

Also, please create new questions instead of necroposting to old questions. That way more people can see it. And feel free to tag me on those if you like.

Best of luck!
