Hi @Jimmy Trivedi ,

Unfortunately, if the issues were truly deleted, then they are gone for good, and you will not be able to find or restore them. I always avoid deleting issues, unless they are simply test issues I created when setting up a project or something similar.

@Jimmy Trivedi -

In Jira/JSM, once the issues are deleted it cannot be restored.  There are third party add-on that can provide you with the functionality.  Take a look at https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1220385/issue-history-for-jira?hosting=cloud&tab=overview&utm_source=Atlassian_Community&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=Article_Jira-Cloud-How-to-restore-deleted-issue_20230130

I agreed with what @Jack Brickey stated previously.

Sorry.

@Joseph Chung Yin thank you for mentioning Issue History for Jira app.

@Jimmy Trivedi

The app developed by my team helps to track and restore deleted issues. I just want to add that storing deleted issues is started only after activating the option in the add-on. You can’t get a record of the issues deleted before the app was installed. So, you can use it to prevent losing deleted issues in the future.

Hi @Jimmy Trivedi

As @Jack Brickey called out once you delete an issue the issue is gone instantaneously and there is no place you can go search for it.

The options you have are:

  • Tighten-up your permissions
    • Reduces your risk, but does not eliminate the risk of data loss
    • Trade-off with the end user needs
  • Backup your data regularly
    • Do it yourself (DIY)
      • Data Backup
        • Manual
          • You have to remember to do it
          • Time consuming
        • Script based
          • Use of non-public API's
          • Maintaining the script
      • Restore
        • All or nothing
          • Data loss when you restore data back as you will overwrite existing data
        • Limitations on how to restore data back based on data volume - refer restore page within the Jira UI
    •  Use a App from the Marketplace
      • There are three broad categories of apps that are there in the marketplace that help you with backup & restore / data protection
        1. Backup & Granular Restore of Jira data (including attachments) & configuration
        2. Backup & Restore (including attachments) & configuration
        3. Restore of Issues only without attachments
      • The difference between 1 & 2 is how the restoration process works All or nothing vs Granular

Depending on what your use case is and the risk profile and the compliance requirements of your organization and how Jira is being used you have multiple choices to pick from :-)

Hi @Jimmy Trivedi ,

Unfortunately, if your issues were deleted, they may not be restored. To avoid the situations like that in the future, it's nice to think about a backup plan. You can arrange backup yourself opting for a backup script, use Jira backup Manager, or use a third-party backup tools to back up your Jira data (here you can read more about the options to back up Jira data: Best Jira Backup Tools).

I represent GitProtect backups for Jira Cloud, Jira Work Management, and Jira Service Management. With the backup solution you can back up projects, issues, roles, workflow, users, attachments, etc. (you can see the full list here). Moreover, you can automate the backup processes by simply scheduling your backups at the most appropriate time. Thus, if the situation of failure arises, you can simply restore your data from any point in time using granular recovery or full data restore to your local device, to the same Jira account or a new one.

You can find out more about GitProtect backups for Jira on Atlassian Marketplace: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1228719/gitprotect-io-backups-for-jira-cloud?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

Or you can simply schedule a demo and get in touch with our team to discuss Jira backups.

Hi @Jimmy Trivedi

By default, Jira does not track deleted issues and deleted issues are lost forever. To prevent it happening again, you can try Restore Deleted Issues app developed by our team. In order for this app to work, the app must have been installed before the issue is deleted.

After you install this app,

  • Both bulk and single issue deletions are logged.
  • You can see when and by whom issues are deleted.
  • You can recover summary, description, comments except attachments.

Below you can find an article about tracking and restoring deleted issues in Jira.

How to Track and Restore Your Deleted Issues in Jira

Hope it helps.
