How to Track and Restore Your Deleted Issues in Jira

Product Backlog is a living artifact. It doesn’t stay constant and it continuously changes over time. During a work day or a week, you may add new issues to the backlog, modify some already open issues, change the priorities, reorder the issues and so on.

Although it is not a common practice, you may also need to delete the issues that are no longer valid so that you can have an up-to-date backlog. But what if you need to have a look at these deleted issues? They may become valid again due the changes in the plans, circumstances and you may need to reopen them or you may need to take a report of these deleted issues, look when and by whom they are deleted and evaluate it. In some extreme cases, a group of issues may also be deleted accidentally and you may find yourself in an unpleasant situation and getting these issues back may be your best way out.

By default, Jira has a built-in feature to restore a deleted project (that has been in trash for less than 60 days) and its content including issues. However, if you delete issues in an active project, there is no built-in feature in Jira to track and restore these issues. As a solution for this exact need, we as Bloompeak team developed two apps for Jira cloud: Restore Deleted Issues and Track Deleted Issues.

Restore Deleted Issues app keeps track of deleted issues and allows you to recover them. In order for this app to work, the app must have been installed before the issue is deleted.

After you install this app,

  • Both bulk and single issue deletions are logged

  • You can see when and by whom issues are deleted

  • You can recover summary, description, comments except attachments

If you just want to track but not restore the deleted issues, you can use Track Deleted Issues app. After you installed this app, it provides audit log for deleted issues (both bulk and single issue deletions) and you can see when and by whom issues are deleted.
