How to create a custom resolution screen?

Kylie Ham July 28, 2023

After moving an issue to the done statues, it is possible to update the resolution using a the simple resolution screen that I think is just a default screen. It gives resolution options like "Fixed," "Won't Fix," "Duplicate," etc. Is there a way to make custom resolutions? We've looked around in our portal but haven't been able to figure it out. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you!

Hi @Kylie Ham

You can do this from the administration settings - to do, you need to be a Product Admin and then...

  1. Select Settings (cog in top-right corner) > Issues
  2. Select Resolutions from the left-hand menu
  3. Scroll to the bottom, and add a new resolution, (name/description + add)

^ A few notes to add...

Hi Stephen! Thank you for your response. One quick clarifying question, if you just add a new resolution, will that show up for everyone using resolution screens company wide? I think we were hoping for resolutions to be specific to our project and not available for everyone else. Let me know if you have thoughts there. Thanks!

Hi @Kylie Ham

Yes, if you add a resolution and do nothing else, everyone will receive the full list.

You'd need to limit resolutions per Workflow to show a smaller list for other Projects - you can do this using transition properties. These are:

  • jira.field.resolution.include
  • jira.field.resolution.exclude

For more information, see this help page

Hi @Ste Wright - to confirm we need to do the following:

1. In the Resolutions section we need to add the custom resolutions that we want to have

2. In each workflow you need to add transition properties for including and excluding certain resolutions depending on the project

3. Publish the workflows

Does that essentially sum up what we are supposed to do? Also, after doing the jira.field.resolution.include should there be spaces between the commas?

We haven't been able to get this to work quite yet so I wanted to be sure we were following all necessary steps. Please let me know if it seems like we're missing something. Thanks!

Hi @Kylie Ham

Yes - for any Project which doesn't use all the resolutions, the transition properties are needed.

You should enter the IDs without spaces in the transition properties.

---

To give an example of how to do this:

  • Go to Settings > Issues
  • Select Workflows from the left-hand menu
  • Locate your Workflow, and edit it
  • Next, select the transition to "Done" - this might be a single arrow from another status, or the "All" arrow if using an open workflow approach
  • From the pop-up box, select Properties
  • Enter..
    • Property Key = jira.field.resolution.include
    • Property Value = 10000,10001,10002
  • Publish the Workflow

HI @Kylie Ham ,

Not sure about team managed projects. In company managed projects, you can add the screen to a transition in a workflow. Just need to create a screen with just the field resolution and add it to the transition that is going to Done.

Resolutions will need to be added by the Jira admin. Here's the documentation:

Hope this helps.
