Gmail shows plain text formatting for customer notifications?

Any idea why Gmail shows plain-text formatting for customer notifications? I tried to bold the comment portion of customer notifications to make them easier to read.

Outlook displays correctly, but Gmail shows plain-text style markdown.

What's up with this? I verified that "Default outgoing email format" under Jira Settings > System > "Default user preferences" is set to html.

On further investigation, this seemed to be affecting both Gmail and Outlook. While the test email function sent a bolded message (pictured about from Grizz Frix), organic comments had the *message* formatting.

But just now, a comment came through properly bolded to Gmail. Perhaps someone is fixing it behind the scenes.
