I've been told, that for comments (underneath an individual Issue/ticket) there is a separate process ??? Is this correct

if you export issues from a Jira project and that you select "All fields" in the CSV export, then you will see the comments in the CSV file. You can look for the "Comment" column.
This can then be imported into another Jira instance, you can have a look at this documentation page on how to handle comments : https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/import-data-from-a-csv-file/
