Can external Salesforce data use Atlassian Data Lake as an intermediary and then be written into JSM

Hi Atlassian Community,

I’m looking for confirmation from an Atlassian expert regarding the capabilities and directionality of the Atlassian Data Lake.

We are evaluating an architecture where Salesforce Asset data would be synchronized into Jira Service Management (JSM) Assets.

The architecture we are considering is:

Salesforce Asset
↓
Salesforce/Data integration
↓
Atlassian Data Lake
↓
JSM Assets

My understanding from Atlassian’s documentation is that the Atlassian Data Lake is primarily a queryable data source containing data sourced from Atlassian applications, and that Data Shares allow Atlassian Data Lake data to be read/exported to external systems.

I have not found documentation showing that an external system such as Salesforce can:

1. Write arbitrary external data directly into the Atlassian Data Lake;
2. Create/maintain a custom external table/object in the Atlassian Data Lake;
3. Then use that Data Lake data as an input/source to create or update JSM Assets.

Could someone from Atlassian please confirm whether the following statement is correct?

The Atlassian Data Lake is not a general-purpose writable staging/data-integration layer for arbitrary external data. It contains data sourced from Atlassian products, and its supported data-sharing capability is primarily for querying/exporting that data. External data such as Salesforce Asset records cannot be written into the Atlassian Data Lake and then routed from the Data Lake into JSM Assets.

If this is not correct, could you please provide the official Atlassian documentation/API that demonstrates:

Salesforce/external source → Atlassian Data Lake → JSM Assets

Specifically, I would like to know:

• Is there an API for writing arbitrary external records into the Atlassian Data Lake?
• Can external/custom data sources create persistent tables in the Atlassian Data Lake?
• Can data written by such a source subsequently be consumed by JSM Assets?
• Is there an official supported architecture for using the Atlassian Data Lake as a staging layer for external → JSM Assets synchronization?
• If not, is the recommended architecture instead to use the Assets External Import API / Forge Assets Import framework to pull Salesforce data directly into Assets?

For reference, I found Atlassian documentation describing:

• Atlassian Data Lake as containing data sourced from Atlassian apps.
• Data Shares as a way to read/export Atlassian Data Lake data to external systems.
• Forge/Assets External Imports as a mechanism for importing third-party data into Assets.

I would appreciate confirmation of the supported architecture and, most importantly, an official documentation link if external → Data Lake → JSM Assets is actually supported.
