Thank you, Data Center.

Hello Data Center Community,

By now, you’ve probably heard that Atlassian is taking a pivotal step in our commitment to a cloud-first future.

This news is significant and personal for many of us. Over the past 10 years, Data Center has been instrumental for your teams and projects, and has helped you unleash your full potential. We’d like to take a moment and say thank you. Thank you for your trust, your feedback, your late-night troubleshooting, and your relentless drive to make things better. You’ve helped shape what Atlassian is today.

Why this change, and why now?

Our job has always been to unleash the full potential of teams. Data Center was the right answer more than a decade ago. But as we look to the future, it’s clear that Data Center products will no longer be able to deliver on our core promise to customers: to supercharge teamwork, help you stay competitive, and drive faster innovation. These outcomes can only be fully realized with the power and innovation of our cloud platform.

To truly set you up for success, we need to provide you with so much more. On our cloud platform, you can unify your data for tailored experiences, bring AI on as a teammate, and move faster as a team with tightly integrated apps, all while staying protected against rising security threats. The reality is, the future of work is in the cloud, and organizations that embrace this shift are best positioned to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and connected world.

We’ve invested heavily in our data foundation as well as security, scale, and compliance so that Atlassian cloud can continue to meet the needs of all organizations, including large, complex, and regulated enterprises. As a result, today 75% of Atlassian’s most regulated and complex enterprise customers are in cloud or on a path to cloud.

To better support US government agencies and their partners with high security requirements, we are actively developing FedRAMP High and Impact Level 5 environments, with the goal of submitting them for authorization before the end-of-life date for Data Center products.

What’s the path forward?

To make this transition as smooth as possible, we’re winding down support in phases over the next three years, giving you plenty of time to plan your next steps.

  • March 30, 2026: No new Data Center subscriptions or Marketplace apps for new customers.
  • March 30, 2028: Last date for existing customers to buy new licenses, apps, or expansions.
  • March 28, 2029: Data Center products become read-only.

Between now and then, we’re committed to supporting you with technical support, security updates, and building new connectors between Cloud and Data Center. This change won’t happen overnight. This transition will be phased over three years with the full support of our teams.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you’re already planning your cloud journey: Learn how you can accelerate with our new complimentary Atlassian FastShift Program, which offers a strategic partnership and dramatically accelerated timelines.
  • If you’re still weighing your options: Let’s talk. We know every organization is different, and we want to help you find the right path.
  • If you’re feeling uncertain or frustrated: Change is hard, and we’re listening.

Resources and next steps:

Final thoughts

This isn’t the end of the story; it’s the start of a new chapter. We’re committed to being your partner as you navigate what’s next. Let’s keep the conversation going. Your feedback, your challenges, and your successes will shape the future of teamwork at Atlassian.

Thank you for everything you’ve built with Data Center. Now, let’s see what we can build together in the cloud.

With appreciation,
Gosia Kowalska
On behalf of the Atlassian Data Center Team

@Gosia Kowalska and team: thank you for address this directly. For those of us who have been in this eco-system much longer than 10-years, and remember when the same codebase was regularly shipped to Server and Cloud, and eventually Server/Cloud/Data Center, it might be helpful to expound more:

Data Center was the right answer more than a decade ago. But as we look to the future, it’s clear that Data Center products will no longer be able to deliver on our core promise to customers: to supercharge teamwork, help you stay competitive, and drive faster innovation. These outcomes can only be fully realized with the power and innovation of our cloud platform.

Some part of the lag that led to this eventual decision was the result of a shift in strategy at Atlassian, correct? Some part of it is certainly due to the speed at which customers adopt those changes, but there was an intention decision to fork and focus on adding features in Cloud vs self-hosted products.

Looking at products like Loom and how they do (or don't) integrate, and Atlassian's recent acquisition of the Browser Company, we get a sense of where things are going. Exciting though it may be, it's unfortunate some of the most loyal, long-time customers may be left behind.

When Atlassian decided to sunset HipChat, they handed-over its IP to Slack. When hosted versions of Data Center products are past EOL -- outside of any contractural escrow requirements Atlassian may be saddled with -- it would be great to see the source code made available for those who want to keep the lights on (and assume any liability) past 3/28/29.

The rapid changes may have come as a surprise, but they also open the door to a future filled with innovation, collaboration, and shared success. Wish Atlassian continues to lead the way in cloud and AI.

Thank you, Data Center. @Gosia Kowalska

Thanks for the thoughtful update, @Gosia Kowalska ! 🙌 Data Center has been a big part of many of our journeys, and it’s great to see the recognition of that history while also giving customers a clear path forward. The phased timelines and programs like FastShift and Ascend will definitely help make the move less daunting. Excited to see how cloud continues to evolve to support even the most complex use cases!

Who else is f*cked up by Atlassian`s customer policy?

On an event in March this year we still had been told by an Atlassian employee, that there are NO PLANS to end DC.

As we have deep integrations / interfaces to our legacy systems, we cannot migrate to Cloud (tested this a lot and it does not work).

For us this will mean: bye bye Atlassian! We might shift to a different provider with better customer treatment.

Some years ago i had same question when will be DC death and seems to be that it arrived sooner than i was thinking it's coming because last year in Barcelona Team i speak other users and they was not planning to move cloud because better overview where they hold data and DC was cheaper than cloud for them and now this announcement.

Probably we will see more in Barcelona this year about moving to Cloud?

As someone who’s mainly implemented in Data Center but also done some development in the Cloud, I can see the appeal of the Cloud platform — especially in terms of innovation and feature development.

Whether we move to Cloud will depend on whether Atlassian can meet the level of data protection, availability and control that we need.

I feel the way Data Center customers have been treated over the past few years with rising costs and now a relatively abrupt end-of-life announcement is frustrating. Some organizations have invested decades into building and maintaining their DC environments and this shift feels like it overlooks that commitment.

Trust is a two-way street. While I understand the business rationale behind focusing on Cloud, I hope Atlassian recognizes that long-term customer relationships are built on more than just product features they’re built on reliability, transparency and respect.

Hi to the Atlassian team,
Data center products are mainly used for highly secure environments with our customers; the cloud products do not provide the same secure environment, so far.
Do you have a plan to provide isolated environments for customers who will be forced to move to the cloud and want to keep their current isolated environments? Or do you expect them to move to another On-prem application other than Atlassian's?

This is not unexpected, but I do feel sadness - and some anger...

But this sums up things well - https://thejiraguy.com/2025/09/08/so-long-data-center/

What are the App (Plugin) vendors obligations to support Apps - I guess from now on all DC vendors will do a minimum of effort on all DC App and focus 100% on cloud.

So, when the next CVE hits and we are again forced to upgrade our DC product - but an (important) app is not compatible - or worse - actually not working...

When will the first time of this be... how long will App vendors maintain new versions compability...

I think the text says: just accept it, DC will go away and our vision is cloud.
(note: all mentioned pro-cloud-arguments are not very strong)

Textually I'm surprised by the many hollow non-meaning sentences and words:

" it’s clear that Data Center products will no longer be able to deliver on our core promise to customers: to supercharge teamwork, help you stay competitive, and drive faster innovation."

"To truly set you up for success, we need to provide you with so much more."

"This isn’t the end of the story; it’s the start of a new chapter."

Also: I hope Atlassian will respond to this comment: https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Data-Center-articles/Thank-you-Data-Center/bc-p/3106089#M1094 from Itamar Ben Sinai

Thats a Joke, right? right?

We put so much effort into Jira DC over the past few years and you guys really want to cut us off and want to force us to move to Cloud?

First you cut off all the old customers in Jira Server, then, 2 years later, you want to cuf off all the DC customers.

You want us to move to Cloud. No selfhosting, less control over features, much higher price, less addons. So you guys kick all the longterm customers in their ass and hide it under the argument "cloud is better, we dont want to work on 2 products".

bye Atlassian i dont want to start at zero again..

Isolated Cloud is coming - and also more than just AWS has the "hosting", im sure thats the answer from Atlassian, but I am also sure it comes with a significant price tag...

This argument is a joke. Why we cant stay competitive if we using DC, why we cant drive fast innovation with DC? We`ve created a really good instance with all the possibilities DC could offer, Scriptrunner helped us a lot to solve issues what the vanilla DC doesnt. As example: Scriptrunner doesnt have even close features in cloud like in dc. We have to rebuild everything from scratch, every single automation, every single customscript need to be reevaluated. We´re running a lot with Scriptrunner and i know that we cant do this in the cloud.

Im very upset about this decision and i hope that the negative impact on Atlassian is huge.

@Tarik Userli I agree 100% - we have JSW,JSM and Confluence DC - evolved over 15 years, and running very well - and we can control the instance.

There is no way that the DC could not be like the Cloud in feature set, if the will and effort was there, and the smartness - but I guess the embarassing number of CVE's and the uncontrolled use of endless of frameworks did not make things better....

Since Jira Data Center will reach end of life in March 2029, we are concerned about future options for user management. Our organization uses Data Center mainly because Jira Cloud does not support direct LDAP / AD DS synchronization. We would like to know if Atlassian plans to add native LDAP sync to Jira Cloud after 2029. If not, what long-term strategy does Atlassian recommend for organizations that depend on direct LDAP / AD DS integration?

@Bekuretsion Tadios LDAP will never come to Cloud:

1. Its a legacy protocol in many ways

2. As Atlassian Cloud has no tunnel from Cloud to "You network", it will be over the internet.

Todays standard is SAML and/or OICD I belive.

Can't say that I like this change. Until Cloud can actually delivers all the things you can do on DC, then ending the life of this product is a bad decision for me. Customers will hear more ofter "I'm sorry, but you can't do that anymore on Jira"...

In 2022, @Gosia Kowalska : “No plans to end of life or end of support for our Data Center offering”
In 2025, @Gosia Kowalska : “Thank you, Data Center”

In IT, the only constant is change. Even “no plans” can turn into a farewell in just three years.

Just another blow in the career that's already dealing with AI reductions.

@Gosia Kowalska  - Please correct your first paragraph. "By now, you’ve probably heard that Atlassian is taking a pivotal step in our commitment to a cloud-first future." This is untrue, the wording should be "Commitment to Cloud-ONLY future."

Anyone else find this news interesting a few days after Atlassian spent a ton of money on a failing AI browser company?

While I'm not a fan of this change either, a lot of y'all are asking about options for those of us that require isolated environments due to "government work".  This was addressed in the article and and Atlassian has been talking about this for a long time.

Atlassian already has their Government Cloud in EAP which is FEDRamp Moderate and there are plans for Isolated Cloud which is supposed to meet the FEDRamp High requirements:

To better support US government agencies and their partners with high security requirements, we are actively developing FedRAMP High and Impact Level 5 environments, with the goal of submitting them for authorization before the end-of-life date for Data Center products.

Again, I'm not happy with this decision, I've put a lot of time into my DC environments and the lift to Cloud is not going to be an easy lift based on feature parity between environments. I suggest reaching out to Atlassian directly if you have any questions in regards to your options here, I've found my Enterprise Advocate to be extremely helpful and supportive.

I just went back to review their Compare Atlassian Cloud vs Data Center article. Funny how it shows what Cloud has that DC does not but fails to show all that DC has that Cloud does not.

Was that list too long?

Cloud may have features the DC does not, but Cloud also has limits, lots of limits; limits on automations, limits on size, limits on comments, limits on attachments, limits on macro's, etc., etc.

It also has what I refer to as "forced features". An example of this is the fact that every Confluence Cloud user automatically gets a personal space, potentially adding thousands and thousands of unwanted spaces. Spaces that will clutter up your instance, take up space, and become a nuisance you have to work around.

To top it all off, if we want a "quick" and "successful" migration, we have to pay for it. Months and months of analysis, redevelopment (if possible) of lost functionality, redevelopment (if possible) of integrations, reformatting and reconfiguration of basically everything,  the list goes on.

And just when you think you've come to the end of that list, you have to retrain your users on an ever-changing Jira UI

If someone finds an alternative for an on premise Jira+Confluence+Bitbucket package, I'm interested to hear about the pros and cons you encounter.

I asked multiple AI's "How many customers Atlassian could lose by this announcement?" The results from Copilot, Gemeni, and ChatGPT stated an estimated 8,000-10,000 clients still use Data Center with 45% of those clients potentially leaving because of this news.

That's still a huge chunk of clients if accurate.

I guess time will tell if Atlassian comes crawling back offering DC with discounts for the lost $$$$. Someone at Atlassian (probably the team who bought a defunct AI browser) thought this was a good idea.

#SaveDCProducts

Unfortunately, we could get a petition signed with 50,000 people and that wouldn't change their minds. :(
