Hello - I would like to have an automation run when I assign a Checklist Item to a Team Member but can not find it in the automation Triggers.

Can someone help with how to achieve this another way?

Thx.

Use Case:

When a checklist item is assigned to Bob, create a card on Bob's tasks board.

Hi Edward, welcome to the community!

At present, there's no trigger available in automation for when a checklist item is assigned. There's an open feature request, which I've gone ahead and added your request to.

If it helps as a workaround, the URL: https://trello.com/my/tasks would take the user to a page where they can see all checklist items assigned to them.

I realise this doesn't fulfil the individual card creation aspect, but hopefully it helps with some level of visibility of tasks assigned?

Hello. I have found two workarounds that will work for my team's needs while we wait for the feature to be added. It's a bit clunky but this seems to work fine.

I found what I'd call a "Basic" Version and the Another Board Version. My team has main boards for different focus areas of our work and a main project management board that allows us to see what is on everyone's workload and how we can better support each other.

"Basic" Version - This version requires whoever is adding items to the checklist to tag the member who the item is assigned to. However, it also is set to trigger Trello to assign the item to the member you request so that it will still show in filters when needed. Setting the rule this way, I was unable to send the converted card to another board as my team needed it to for some reason.

"Basic" Version (requires tagging in checklist item)

  1. Create automation
  2. Add Trigger "when an item ending with @(insert member's username) is added to a checklist
  3. Add action "assign the item to member (username)"
    1. This makes sure that when they filter for their username, the item is still assigned to them and will still show up with the filter active.
  4. Add action "convert the item to a linked card at the top of list (list name)"

Another Board Version - This version requires each member to have this rule enabled on all of the boards, except the project management/to-do/task list board. Using the {usernamelessmentiontext} variable just makes it "prettier" for us so that the tagged member is taken off the linked cards name when it uses the checklist item's text to name the card.

Another Board Version (requires tagging as well as having each member add rule from their accounts and set this rule as enabled on all boards except to-do/task list board)

  1. Create automation
  2. Add Trigger "when I am mentioned in a checklist on a card"
  3. Add action "assign the item to me"
    1. This makes sure that when they filter for their username, the item is still assigned to them and will still show up with the filter active.
  4. Add action "create a new card with title {usernamelessmentiontext} in list (list name) on board (board name)
  5. Add action "link the card with the item"

Hope this helps someone!

Hi @Sydney Battle! Thanks for your interest in this feature. I've passed your interest to our product team in our internal open feature request. Thanks for sharing your feedback with us!
