How to include automations in a open source template?

Hi, I like the new Trello templates and think they are cool.

I have a customized board for personal use that I would like to share with my friends and the world. That board has a couple of Butler automation rules that I would like to include with the template.

My friends claim that they need to be added to the board in order to view the automation rules, but that kinda defeats the whole purpose of the template.

How can I include the automation rules as part of the template?

Thanks

Hi Chinmay,

I think Trello templates are pretty cool too! Unfortunately, we cannot copy over the automation to the template.

As automations are linked to the user who created them on the Workspace, the only way to share your Automations with other users is that they need to be on the same Workspace.

You can use Automation Libraries - This allows you to add your Automation to a library and the users of the same Workspace can import your Automations on any Board they create from your template, in the same Workspace, and create their own instance of your Automation.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the response!

I didn't know about Automation libraries. After looking through them, I don't think they can help resolve my issue of sharing automation rules with the public. Rules can only be part of 1 library at a time and can only be shared within a workspace.

Is there a way to request this feature for automation libraries? Tie them to boards and templates instead of workspaces.

I'm ok waiting for this feature. It's just gonna prolong how long it takes me to convince my friends and others to use Trello. Consider a 5-minute setup to get started with a kick-ass board with automation versus a 30-minute setup to manually input all the automation.

Hi Chinmay,

I have added you to the feature request where a customer would like to have these automation rules automatically enabled when boards are created from templates. I think this is where your use case will fit in. Apparently, there are a couple of other users who have the same suggestion :)

If you are curious about how our team decides which requests we work on, we have published a blog post with detailed information on this process here: https://blog.trello.com/feature-requests-unite-support-and-product

If you'd like to see our latest features and future releases you can take a look at our roadmap at https://www.atlassian.com/roadmap/cloud?selectedProduct=trello. Our mobile boards are available at https://trello.com/b/5tj4qAvo/trello-ios-app and https://trello.com/b/ud59t1fL/trello-android-app.

Sweet thanks Mutya!
