When clicking on the Trello icon in the browser, the add link window opens, but the Add button is not active.

Which extension are you using? I don't think we have an official Trello Chrome extension currently.
It looks like we used to, but seems like it has been unavailable for a while.

For example, you could make use of this: https://trello.com/add-card
There's a link on that page which once added to your bookmarks lets you create cards instantly from the top of the browser.
