Multi-add users, and default to no component subscriptions

Hi guys,

This is a 2 part question:

Firstly, I have a large group of users who I need to subscribe to just 1 component. Is it possible to add users en masse, or does it have to be done individually? Everything I've attempted so far seems to suggest the latter. 

Secondly, every time I set up a subscriber, they are (by default) subscribed to ALL components. Is it possible to amend this default so that they aren't subscribed to ANY components initially, and then add them later?
