I am trying to create a status page for certain sites and needs to know how they work... like how exactly does the statuspage recognize if the site is down or if few components in the site is not working or is in downtime?

Thanks for reaching out to community. Statuspage works off components and those components can be manually changed to reflect the state of whatever they are representing or they can be automated to change status based on certain conditions.
Statusapge is not a monitoring service, so you would need to use a separate monitoring service such as Opsgenie to be able to talk to Statuspage if you want to automate the components.
