How can I add a left navigation like the Documentation Theme to my custom theme?

I'm creating a custom theme and would like to implement a left navigation like in the documentation theme. How can I do this? Which .vmd and .vm files should I look at? We have a corporate license and have access to the confluence soure code.

Note: I've followed the steps on this page --> https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONF32/Adding+a+Navigation+Sidebar

But it does not give a left navigation like the Documentation theme, where the main content area will scroll independent of the sidebar.
