You need some plugins to support Gantt charts, such as:

BigGantt - Gantt Chart for Jira

WBS Gantt-Chart for Jira

Structure.Gantt - Planning at Scale

Gantt-Chart for Jira

That's interesting Ollie. Here was I thinking I just had to click on the Gantt Chart option in Jira and all would work for me !! This seems a bit disappointing.
