Difference between a software project and business project

So we are testing out some stuff within Jira, and found that there is a difference between a software project and a business project. (both company managed)

For example, if i would like to add another Kanban board to a business project, that is not possible. For that, i will need a software project instead of a business project.

Is there an overview on all the major differences between these types of projects, or maybe even better; when to choose what type of project? We are not doing any kind of software projects, but we do would like to have multiple kanban boards for example...

Hi @RedBottle ,

Jira Business is a project tracker for business teams because it supports working across marketing, operations, sales, HR, finance, legal, and design while Jira Software is for agile project management and software development team

Check this product guide about Jira Work Management vs. Jira Software: https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/work-management/product-guide/jwm-vs-jsw#what-is-jwm

You can also check this thread discussion: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/what-is-difference-between-software-or-Business-in-jira/qaq-p/596397#:~:text=JIRA%20Business%20does%20not%20support,have%20Forms%20or%20a%20Summary.

Hope it helps.

Thanks!

Hello @RedBottle

Adding to the information provided by @Dexter de Vera be advised that Jira Work Management and Jira Software are being combined into a single product going forward.

Given that, you would have access to both feature sets.

So, if you choose to have a Business project, you could use the Software feature of creating boards from a saved filter to create addition boards that reference your Business project based on a saved filter that retrieves the Business project issues. Refer to

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-articles/Multiple-boards-in-Business-and-Team-Managed-Projects-You-bet/ba-p/1719761

That would not give you a pull down list of boards in your Business project, like you would see in your Software project, but you could add Shortcuts to your Business project to reference the additional boards.

Some feature are becoming directly available in the other type of project. For example Calendars are becoming available in Software projects.

Hi Redbottle,

I don't think there is a comprehensive list of features between work management and software projects, especially that the features available are changing very quickly especially in the cloud (for the better!).

So I'll share my strategy with you: I only create company-managed software projects. I often have the same use cases as you, that is non-software task management (HR, Purchasing, Marketing...) and I always create software projects for 2 main reasons:

- Better Kanban boards that also happen to be more like Trello which most people are already familiar with
- No differences in feature availability between the projects in my instance (because I don't create business projects) which is much better for training and support.

Also Atlassian announced that they were going to merge Jira Software and Jira Work Management into Jira! And I assume this new Jira will be more like Jira software. (but this is just me guessing)

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the information. It helped me a lot by giving me a better understanding of how everything works. I'm very new to the software and so on, and it's kinda hard to figure out how everything works. But thanks to such sites and all the info online, I'm getting better. I have some business ideas, and for sure, before starting, I need to do some research. Here is one company called DDI Development, which seems to be a good one to work with when it comes to different software solutions, and I'll for sure work with it. But for now, I need to think about my plan more and then start working with different specialists.

@RedBottle

In addition to what @Trudy Claspill / @Dexter de Vera stated, I would like to state that don't get stuck on the wording of "Software project", because Jira Software Application is flexible where one can still use "software project" to conduct his/her business related project mgmt.

Please note that JWM is now a part of Jira software...

Here is another reference link on JWM vs JSW =

Hope this also helps.

Best, Joseph
