fail UPM upgrade in 5.0.2

Remco Ros April 2, 2012

I just upgraded to Jira 5.0.2 (from 5.0.1).

In the plugin manager, it says UPM needs an upgrade, but it does not upgrade.

It keeps saying: Preparing to update UPM... but never finishes.

I found this in catalina.out:

2012-04-03 16:22:33,821 QuartzWorker-1 ERROR ServiceRunner upmPluginUpgradeCheckJob [sal.jira.scheduling.JiraPluginSchedulerService] Unable to load a service descriptor for the job 'upmPluginUpgradeCheckJob'. This is usually the result of an obsolete service that can removed in the Administration section.

Same problem here, during am upgrade from Confluence 3.5.6 to 4.1.9. Had to install the new version by hand.

How do you install by hand ?

I installed manually too now. Seems to fix it.

How to update a plugin manually:

  1. Go to Atlassian Marketplace
  2. Download the plugin you wish to update
  3. In JIRA, go to the Plugins page in the Administration
  4. Click on "Upload Plugin" located to far right of the Filter visible plugins box

If you are using UPM 2.7.8 or 2.7.9, you are probably facing the problem described in this KB:

UPM Self-Update fails when updating from UPM 2.7.8 or 2.7.9 to newer versions

Basically, you will need to manually upgrade your UPM plugin in JIRA by following this documentation.
