What is the recommended maximum number of gadgets in a dashboard?

Alejandro December 4, 2024

Hi Community,

I want to create a dashboard where I can monitor the time spent on each project (60+ projects). My idea was to add a 'Grouped filter Results (by sumUp)' gadget for each project, but I found out that the gadget limit is set to 20 by default. I have seen that I can change that limit with 'jira.dashboard.max.gadgets=X' in jira-config.properties.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a max gadget limit recommended.

Can I set the limit to 70 without affecting the performance of the instance?

Thanks in advance!

Hey @Alejandro, interesting question and welcome to the Atlassian Community.

As far as I know the maximum recommended number of dashboards gadgets is 20 (which is already a lot of gadgets), hence that being the default value.

However, you could probably add around 30 simple gadgets without performance being seriously impacted. Most people don't do this though as it's beyond their needs and can make the dashboard too crowded and unusable, even without considering performance issues.

The extent to which the number of gadgets impacts performance also depends upon how complex each gadget is too. For example, if you have lots of really simple charts it can be less of a performance drag than having a smaller number of more complex charts.

70 does seem like you are going to have major lag so I wouldn't recommend it! But I also should say that I haven't tested this personally.

It would be interesting to hear what your experience is like, if you do decide to try this out I personally would like to know at what point (what number of gadgets) performance starts to hit a wall.

Hope that offers a bit of help.

Hi @Michael Yaroshefsky - Visor for Jira ,

I finally have discarded that idea, I think that charts regarding time logged per project are going to be too complex to process them all at the same time.

I am thinking now in another way of monitoring that time, but thank you for your time and help, really appreciate it!

Regards.

Hi @Alejandro ,

It really depends upon the data you load, Number of requests in each gadget..etc.

Ideally it won't have much impact for 30-40 (Not sure about 70). But make sure the filter data is optimal.
