Hello,

I am a new Jira user, and for my work, I would like to create a "parent" project that would group together both in the timeline and backlog a set of other "child" projects.

In the "child" projects, I would like only the child project's backlog to be displayed in the timeline. For confidentiality reasons, I need to separate my projects, but I also need to have an overview to organize myself. Is it possible to achieve this with the free version? With the paid version? If so, could you please help me?

Best regards

Hi @Axel Vernay

This can be achieved using boards and board filters.

Each board had a filter that defines what appears on the board, e.g for a project "My First Project" where the Project Key is MFP you can create a board "My First Project Board" based on that project where the board filter is:

Project = "My First Project"

or

Project = MFP

If you then have 2 other projects "My Second Project" (MSP) and "The Third Project" (TTP), you can have a board for each project with these board filters:

Project = "My Second Project"

Project = "The Third Project"

The timeline view (which is a free feature) on the board for any one of these projects will show the timeline for only that project.

If you then want to combine the information on these boards into a parent project you can create a new board with the board filter:

Project IN ("My First Project", "My Second Project", "The Third Project")

Where IN means use all of these projects as opposed to equals in the previous boards which means only this project.

This is where the timeline view gets more complicated; the timeline view for a board can only be used for one project so to show multiple projects i.e. all the child projects on your parent project you would need to use Plans which is a premium feature.

If you were to use Plans you could then use the parent project board as the data source for the timeline view.

TLDR: You can show single project timelines with the free version, but you need the paid version to show timelines from multiple projects on Plans
