Story Points / Estimation not appearing on Jira Backlog

We have an intermittent issue with Story Points not showing up for some stories on a team backlog.

Story points are being set via the AppFire Planning Poker App, and are always showing on the Jira ticket and in the estimation detail field, but occasionally they are not showing up on the backlog:

I'm at a bit of a loss as too why this happens for only one team and only sometimes (the same scrum master/planning session will have some come through successfully and others fail). Any suggestions on how to diagnose / what settings I may have missed?

Hello, Good day. Please go to board settings >> Estimation >> make sure story point is selected for estimation.

Thanks Mohanraj, it is set to use story points, but time tracking is set to none - would that affect this?

Apologies if it was't clear from my screenshot, but also worth noting that the majority of stories are showing Story points correctly in the backlog, it is just a few that are not behaving.

Is the board driven by the nominated Story Points field, or is there some other underlying field that is copied to make it all work?

Hi @Diana Samsonyan, sadly no direct solution to this problem, but we have since stopped using the Planning Poker plugin and are now just entering the points via the board in planning/refinement sessions which has worked around the issue.

It looks like the field set in the preview is the estimate field, and not the story points field (which is what you would see on the backlog in the gray bubble).

By any chance are the teams whose points are not showing up working in team managed projects instead of company managed projects?

Hi Avigail,

The project is configured to use story points for estimation, and generally it was doing this mapping correctly, I suspect it was something to do with how the Planning Poker app was setting the story points, but could never reliably replicate it (especially outside this project).

As an aside, we are using Jira Data Centre, so I don't think there is a Team-Managed vs Company managed options (though it effectively maps to team managed from my reading). We'll be migrating to the cloud later this year, so can look into that if it will have any effect.

Hi Peter,

Good luck with the migration. I hope that it all goes smoothly. If you have a choice, I recommend having your projects switched to company managed - this option will allow you to reuse configurations, such as issue types, workflows, and permission schemes, for multiple projects as well as allow you to have more than one board per project and thus to create boards with custom filters that pull issues from multiple projects. But the pros and cons of team vs company managed projects is best left to a different thread.

All the best.
