Mentions without Wiki renderer

I've read pretty consistently that for @mentions to work in a text field Wiki Renderer needs to be enabled. Because my uses like to put code snippets into comments we have to use the default renderer. In my own testing i was able to get mentions running with default render. I want to check if this will fail down the road for some reason, of has Atlassian finally changed this?
