Keep Track of Deposit Payments and Balance Payments for a Task

Any suggestions on how to keep track of getting paid for a task that does not involve any time tracking?  We just need to bill and track a flat amount billed as one invoice with a deposit and balance.

Each task we do has a fee we charge associated with it that we invoice for. The process involves manually creating invoices in QuickBooks. Ideally it would be nice have a single source of truth and record it in Jira, especially so work does not get released if the balance becomes past due.

To keep things simple, let’s say we need to track getting paid $100 for Task A. We make a proposal for $100 with a $50 deposit and $50 balance and then invoice.

If we just make custom fields, then they don’t have their own Statuses and we’d also need somewhere to keep track of some sort of payment note. If we make an issue type which has statuses and everything else an issue has, we can track the payment workflow, make some transitions screens to require a payment note, make an automation to mark a linked task “Hold” of the payment becomes past due, etc.

I may have answers my own question, but hoping to get some more suggestions.

Hi Guy,

I am a little confused on the actual process. Do you have a step-by-step use case that describes what is needed when? Why do you need statuses for the payments? Why not just create a another custom field with a dropdown for the payment "status"?
