Jira Data Centre Trial to Jira Cloud Migration

Technology Group July 14, 2023

Hi, Our migration to Jira Cloud looks OK but we choose "Test Migration" initially from the Jira Migration Assistant, instead of "Production Migration". Is there a way to promote the migration to "Production", or do we have to re-do the migration? Would there be any issues if we were to go "live" with the test migration? Thanks!

Hi @Technology Group,

What do you mean by "test migration"?

The migration assistant just helps you move your data from one environment into another. If that went well and you are happy with the data in the cloud as they were, you can use them as they are over there. A couple of things I can think of as potential issues:

  • if your users are still working in your Data Center instance (thinking that you just did a test migration), any changes made after you did your test migration are lost, obviously.
  • If your cloud site is currently running on a trial license, that is technically fine but that will have to be updated to a commercial license after the expiry date.
  • If you have given your test site another url that you intended for production, you may have to update that as well.

Most commonly, data is migrated in a test environment, properly tested (you don't always know when it looks good at first sight that everything is totally fine) and when you have a formal sign-off, then re-run the migration for real to your production site.

But when you're happy as it is, the decision to go live as it is is totally up to you.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info! What i mean by "test migration" is that during the "Migrate your data" Part of the Migration Assistant, During the Create new Migration, it asks "Choose migration stage", and the choices are "Production migration stage" or "Testing stage". So it's not clear to me what is the impact of choosing one or the other?

Thanks

NVM, found the answer in the docs, is it just a tag:

"

  • production or testing. This option doesn’t affect your migration. It will help you recognize different migrations plans on the dashboard."
